The Hack

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Tommy showed up at the Hack’s secret back door at the arranged time. The doorman let him in immediately. He had a case that followed behind him with speakers and keyboards poking out. Two dish antennas were velcroed to the side. They were moving, swiveling around, and tracking things. He kicked the “No Trespassing—Danger” sign out of the way, and headed through.

Danny and Alex had ordered pretzels. They had been fabricated to order, nuked, and carried to the table. The extruded dough formed a medieval fort with ramparts and cannon made of bacon bits. They were a perfect golden brown with flakes of sea salt sprinkled on top. They smelled delicious. Danny tore the pretzel apart until it was cleaned of spam. The spam sections had an unpleasant bitter taste. Then he took a bite of one of the remaining fragment.

The Good Spam warning was personalized just for him. It requested he come in and get his pre-authorized prescriptions for his addictions. Mega Nazis had auto geolocated him near a known gamer habitat. It was a reminder that Mega Con was there, watching him in his journey through life. They’d used the Internet of Things interfaces to send the Gamer Addict warning message.

Tommy up ended his equipment case, then sat down on it. He stared at the torn-up pretzel. “Yeah, we need to hack pretzel machines. Hack into the next authorized spam message update. Have them all print out ‘Pretzels of the world — Free at Last!’”

Juicer said, “Do the coke cups while you’re at it.” He held up his, with its suggestions that he keep Danny away from gamer infested locations such as the one they were currently in — or face the consequences. He hadn’t read the fine print. He hadn’t read any of it. It was nothing but spam, authorized and protected by the forces of government. Spam, first letter of SHAFT. Once government started to regulate spam, government spam was encouraged. Of course, it wasn’t actually from the government, but from contractors doing work for the government. Once Regulated, spam was Authorized and Protected.

“Major_Tom. How’s business?”

Tommy looked from one to the other. “Vengeance is doing good. I have side angles on the open source project that pay well. I could use help. Seriously.”

Alex replied, “Danny wants to go after the moon prize. With the money from winning Last Bot.”

Tommy was surprised. “The Moon prizes? What chance does anyone have? What I’m doing is solid, steady money. It’s not exciting. Nothing like moon rockets.”

Alex said, “Don’t think moon rockets. Think a game.”

Tommy said, “A game?”

“Maybe a takeoff from Vengeance. Change the map to the lunar map, then use a game profile like for city building. Integrate Sim for testing. To determine what works in the real.”

Alex nodded. “Moon Sim. Moon Real.”

They explored the parallels between Last Bot and a simulation of the Moon game. Sim was in the sandbox, just for testing. Moon Real would be an actual machine moving and doing things on the Moon.

“Suppose we go explore an area with valuable minerals. Suppose we wanted to map an area. Or build a highway. Any of this would involve running bots on the moon. They’d be run twenty-four seven by Earth time, all the way through a lunar day. That’s about two weeks? All those are gamers’ missions in game, like in a SimSin city. It’d take a big team to just run one printer or rover. Those kinds of teams don’t just appear out of nowhere. So, you’d have the Sim, where hundreds of teams could compete, and the best might get a shot at a lunar rover. The teams would be a lot like Bot teams. Captain, drivers, research ferrets.”

Danny was dubious. “So, — what would the game be? How would the players move? Goals? Rewards? Levels?”

Tommy’s greasy hair fell down, half covering one eye. Head down, he looked up. “You know what you’re talking about? A new world. Guys could just start building stuff and exploring. Driving lunar rovers from momma’s basement?” Tommy sat back and stared at the ceiling.

Danny said, “It’s not just software. Like Last Bot, it needs the best hardware. Crazy hot and cold temperatures and the vacuum. We have to get the Heads figured out, the basic bot design hardened to lunar conditions. Then get it tested in the sandbox. We’re just trying to create a winning proposal. If we had fifty to a hundred guys to help create the equipment — this is what I’m hoping for. And if it was the right stuff, it could go big.”

Tommy thought for a moment, “Say you had robots up there. Running twenty-four seven, you could make a run to the equator.”

Danny answered, “First, we’d have to know how to build engines up there, instead of hauling them from Earth. Then we make rovers. And they’d have to be reliable. The max useful day is about two weeks, but we’re talking the North Pole area, so figure it’s less. Maybe two hundred hours. A team would take shifts running a rover, and work straight thru the two hundred hours.

It’s the complete opposite of the Apollo. Those landed and then departed in the lunar early morning when the conditions were mild. If Apollo had landed at high noon, they’d be roasted meat. This is more like the Soviet Lunokhod rovers. Those could run nonstop through the Lunar Day, then they’d sleep through the Night.”

Tommy paused, looking up Lunokhod. He frowned at the shiny, ugly silver turtle, the first rover on the Moon. “Lunokhod. Not going to win beauty contests with anything like that, dude.”

Danny simply said, “Yeah, but it’s intense. Like vodka. If I could get a printer on the Moon, and just make working engines.”

Tommy was quiet, then said, “You’d need a lot of help. Suppose gamers did run rovers, it’d take a couple dozen guys to keep one rover going twenty-four seven nonstop. Suppose a couple rovers did a pole to equator lunar run. You have any idea what the advertising revenues might be?”

Something bothered him. He was silent, and then he continued with a thoughtful look, “To win the prize and make it work, a team would need backup. It’d be a lot more than just drivers. It might be a hundred players. You’d have to prove to them they’ve got an actual world to work. It’d be the biggest thing since well — there’s nothing comparable. It’s an entire world.”

“At the start of the Sim game, say we had a couple hundred gamers. It’d jump to five digits once if the gear went to Moon Real and worked, like you say. Then it could go six digits and up. But you’d need hardware that would work on the moon and not fry or chill out. You’d need testing areas in Sandbox set up for those conditions.”

Danny said, “Open source. Like the rest of the Sandbox code.”

Alex added, “And the Last Bot code.”

Tommy looked at them. Then he said, “Let me work on it. I have to understand the space stuff better. That science stuff. Maybe look up more about what the old rovers did. Then think about what game might be. I’ll talk with the core developers and see what they think. Come over to my place tomorrow?”

Alex looked disappointed. “I have to work,” he said.

Danny said, “Take the call on the job? I’ll patch you in.”

Alex looked unsure. “Message ten minutes ahead, can you? I’ll get freed up for the call.”

Danny nodded.

They walked out.

16. Mom’s Basement

Tommy’s basement lair

Albuquerque, New Mexico

The next day, Danny took a ride to Tommy’s house. Tommy’s Mom let him in, and then pointed him to a door leading down to the basement. He opened the door, and was hit by a dry, ozone smell, with the acrid, bitter hint of burned resistors. He looked at the glow seething up, and then noticed the big red sign.

“WARNING—NO ENTRY unless you place handhelds, tablets, computers and phones in foil bag before entering. Seal it. Put the bag in another foil bag. Seal the second bag. Then you may enter.” By the side of the basement door was a hook, holding what looked like silver shopping bags. He took his handheld and put it in one, then put another bag around it like the instructions said. He started down toward the eerie, flickering blue glow.

The glow trapped the dark and tamed it, as it shifted and pulsated. He started threading a path through row after row of shelves —laptops, notebooks and tablets, each one upright like the old shelves with books. Each machine had a spine label. He looked closer.

Under each label was a square barcode. On the floor was a six-inch layer of old keyboards, mice, small stuff, stuff that had toasted, and small stuff simply tossed. It reeked of burned resisters and blown capacitors and the smell of circuit boards and plastics. The only sound was his tennis shoes, crunching and grinding the stuff even further.

Major crunching was complete, though. The new floor was a homogenized layer of stuff from long ago, small, colored and sharp bits, mixed in with larger chunks, with a fragment of a cable or a wire harness, or a key. Fist sized black lumps once lived as power modules. Many keys had lost their keyboards, and randomly surfed the floor, looking for their home, only to be shattered under a boot. A place of headphones and mice, of parts still alive, and parts long dead, with only the bones of their circuit boards left to show they had ever existed, ever been touched by a human hand.

Then his foot hit a hard, heavy thing. He stumbled, and fell hard. It was a big lump, maybe once the core of a motor, and fell hard. A thousand sharp edges of broken plastic bit into exposed skin. He looked up and found himself staring at a raised platform, about a foot above the debris and junk. He was looking at Tommy flat on his back, with Sasha’s cropped black hair, and her long, slender body coiled on top of him, holding his arms down. He’d interrupted something.

Sasha looked up with an excited grin, and then saw Danny. She purred, “Hello, handsome!” In one motion, she rocked back on her knees, then forward, rose, and pivoted to the side.

Tommy cranked his head around, freed one arm, twisted half over, and raised himself. Then he got up on one knee, steadied himself, and heaved his body upright. “Danny!” he panted, with some difficulty. “Hi. Let me just get up.”

“What’s this about putting all the gear in a bag before coming down here?” Danny asked.

“So the gear can’t give us away, man. So it can’t talk upstream. Gear reports, you know? Approved devices are reporting devices — location, conversations, and actions. Not just what you do online, everything. They report everything to the judicial servers.”

“This basement is off net, private. If your gear weren’t bagged, your gear would be reporting.” Sasha sidled up and leaned against Tommy and rubbed his back, smiling. “I like our little cave. The kitchen’s really nice.”

Tommy’s eyes lit up looking at her, as she walked off. His eyes still glinting with excitement, he whispered, “Look at this. We hacked the damn keyboards.”

He walked over to the table with the mound of keyboards. Tommy showed Danny various styles of the government mandated AC-1Kybd keyboard, with the General Welfare and Safety enhancements. “My software acquires the physical and on-line patterns, then sends dummy packets upstream — synced with the movement of the user’s hands and fingers.”

Our little cave? Danny wondered. “How come you still live with your parents?”

Tommy looked up from the keyboard in his hand. “Hand me those wires, the red and black ones with the clips? See, this basement was the original house. We all grew up here. Back then, the concrete roof was perfectly flat and just had four feet of dirt on top of it. It blended into the hillside. But it was designed to be the basement of the big house. Now hand me the black coax.”

He pointed to a pile of hundreds of black coax cables that looked identical. Danny, bewildered, guessed at one, and handed it to him.

Tommy nodded, and attached them to the keyboard. “The idea was, while the family grew and Dad was making more money, he’d build a two-story house on top. Eventually we did, when I was in high school. Then I went off to college. Sophomore year, they couldn’t send money anymore. Okay, so I’m going to link this keyboard in and you’ll see what we just did.” He connected the wires to a box on the table.

“They couldn’t make the house payments and put me through college. That was after the second bank failure and that Strong Dollar fiasco. College was over for me. I’d already figured out the game, and decided, screw all that. Look, for this keyboard test, we’ll use Lucky Punk — he’s a fake virtual person we use for testing. Lucky is always getting in trouble. They’ll be watching him from the moment he logs in. They’ll let him make a couple moves, then he’ll be cuffed. Not very lucky.”

Tommy finished hooking the wires up to the box and looked over. “Our Man in the Middle box listens to all traffic both ways, and replaces some traffic.”

He pointed to the table with the newer keyboards, stripped of housings, a rat’s nest of wires and cables surrounding them. Tommy explained how he’d decrypted transmissions from the AC-1Kybd, commingled data streams, and then re encrypted the data stream. The result was the keyboard AI never noticed felony count exceeding the statistical averages.

Felony count was a predictive pre-assessment based on the National Pre-Criminal Felony database. It flagged persons whose count exceeded two standard deviations from the norm for the person’s profile, geographical area, and genome makeup. Naturally, adjustments were added in for past racial injustice, inequities in socioeconomic status and social justice qualifiers.

Modern prosecutorial discretion routinely disregarded the dozen or so felonies which each citizen committed each day. The Suspect Felon database was functionally complete as of 2020. Legacy crime investigation, arrest, and prosecution become mostly things of the past.

Since everyone committed felonious acts and their actions were all logged, the only issue was figuring out who the troublemakers were and picking them up. Before they caused trouble, of course. Subjects rarely realized when they committed serious infractions, given the millions of laws applying to consumers alone. That was just the baseline noise of the population’s illegal behavior. Law enforcement then could focus on the important cases. Those with implications for social and environmental justice.

The AC-1Kybd was a phenomenal advance, allowing the keyboard to arrest the individual. Most car chases, no knock entries, and search warrants were things of a barbaric, primitive past. Society had advanced. Of course, this had displaced many workers. The process of selection, arrest and incarceration of the optimum percentage of the population for prison was a major industry.

Today, the lower keyboard edge, in addition to its ergonomic and healthy anti-Carpal Tunnel design, was a four-claw Internet aware, remote activated automatic handcuffing mechanism.

Once activated, the Suspect Felon was handcuffed securely to his keyboard or notebook. It would take authorized law enforcement personnel to remove the cuffs.

Authorized meant Homeland Security personnel. Issues dealing with Internet access usually disregarded state and county lines. They had to be dealt with by the appropriate federal agency subsection or task force. These included the federal judicial, the environmental division, equal opportunity, and many others. Then there were the international agreements. Reciprocal cuffing protocols allowed nations to work to their mutual interest in enforcing laws, fines and penalties against offenders halfway across the world. The reciprocal payment procedures allowed a fast and efficient exchange of income streams, less the percentage retained by the local agents of collection, of course. At any time, real time data from individuals keyboarding was being simultaneously monitored by a hundred agencies.

Generally, offenders were simply fined. While cuffed, the audio interface could be used to arrange payment for the fines. The suspect felon would be uncuffed after he made his payment arrangements.

Automated keyboard integral handcuffing with positive ID was one of the great advances of the twenty-first century. It was comparable to the innovation of fingerprinting in the twentieth century. Not by any means was fingerprinting obsolete. Fingerprinting was an integral part of any keyboard use. Fingers being willingly presented at every keyboard every moment of online activity.

There were further protective measures in case an auto cuffed individual tried to escape his fate. Should the suspect smash the keyboard or otherwise use physical force, the unit would auto deploy the Electroshock Mobility Suppressor. The EMS incorporated the full capabilities of the portable stunner technology. Stun Klaws were built in. The governments had shown the public many times, over and over, the dramatic and peaceful solutions to conflict resolution induced by the EMS Stun Klaws. They had come to be called Peace Klaws.

Yes, the AC-1kybd with the EMS option had brought law enforcement into the twenty-first century, and given Homeland Security the tools it had needed to properly fulfill its designated tasks. As the Chief of the National Police Association had said when the AC-1kybd was rolled out, “America is now safe from foes inside and out. It’s quite stunning.”

Tommy brought up a weather map on the wall, and picked an area of intense storm activity near Akron, Ohio. The radar showed flashing lightning bolt symbols, and the map showed hook shaped splotches of red and purple. Underneath the text read, “Tornado Warning.” He clicked on the video window to the side. The sound came on, a sound like freight trains. The wind and rain slanted sideways, almost horizontal. The camera switched to a street view. A trashcan was cartwheeling down the street.

Tommy typed something. He looked at Danny. “Here we go. Right now, the keyboard geolocated our imaginary friend in Akron, Ohio. Big storm hitting right there. Our imaginary friend is named Lucky Punk. Now, you use the console to look up something bad. Try doing an Ask about — how about ‘White Power skin heads’”.

Danny put on the gloves, velcroed them tight at the wrist. He waved his fingers around and laughed. Each of the glove’s fingers was ridiculous, ending in nine-inch aluminum nails. Construction nails. “Nice.”

Tommy nodded. “Good. Now look up ‘hero Snowden’. That will really piss the AI off. And keep your hands clear of the keyboard — use the nine-inch nails.”

It was slow typing with the nine-inch finger nails, but he got it done. After the Snowden Ask, the Klaws immediately snapped shut, two per wrist. At least, what the AI thought was a wrist. Danny slipped his hands out of the Long Gloves, and carefully extracted the gloves from the Klaws. When he pulled the gloves out, the Klaw electrodes lost contact, and the Electro Mobility Shock option activated. Inch long electrical arcs bridged the two pincers of the Klaws as millions of volts raced between them. The razor-sharp pincers attempted to bite into flesh and shock a keyboarder foolish enough to try to escape. Then the snapping sound of the arc stopped, leaving just the acrid smell of disassembled air molecules.

“Stay clear. It will try again every minute or so.”

Danny nodded. “Don’t worry.”

Tommy nodded. “Normally, they’d send one of the Homeland buses around to the site the keyboard reports and pick up the felon, but Lucky here seems to be in the middle of a bad storm. And communication was dropped. See, it’s all based on continual reporting. TSA’ll assume the machine went offline because of the storm. We sent garbled data packets for the GPS info. They don’t know the exact GPS coordinates, so they can’t just go pick him up. They figure he’ll wander around cuffed for days before he finally flags down a patrol bus to take him to jail.”

Danny rolled his eyes. “Voluntary compliance?”

Tommy didn’t answer. “Okay, so you asked about the basement. After college ended, I came back home, and they gave me the whole basement. It’s perfect. I pay my parents for it, we’ve got a separate entrance, and we’re shielded from tracking.”

“Look, you’re here to talk about your Moon schemes. I sketched out a plan for Moon Real and Moon Sim games. I used the console operating system for Vengeance, put a new game rules set in, and added the keyboard hack. You won’t have to worry about snoops watching what you’re doing.”

Danny hit the final key on his handheld to start the video chat, and saw Alex’s face appear. He looked up. “You put illegal hacks in the game gear?”

Tommy smirked. “Every Moon Sim or Real package downloaded will have the hacks. When the system boots into Moon Real or Moon Sim, it’ll dominate the keyboard operating system and take it over. They shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Why would they care about monitoring or regulatory cuffing for in game behavior? And they don’t have the manpower to go after one in a hundred.”

Alex’s voice came in through the video link. “But the Moon’s real!”

Tommy picked up the handheld and addressed the small image. “Hey, you made it. Good to see you, Alex. Right, it’s real. And would you like to be cuffed for something you did off Earth?”

On the monitor, Alex in miniature looked angry. They saw his face contort with anger. “No way!”

Tommy nodded. “Right. And the UN thinks they own the Moon. UN members who signed the Moon Treaty have reciprocal rights with the US. You could get cuffed and taken to jail in the USA. For violating the Moon Treaty as viewed by some cubicle cop in Brisbane, Australia.”

The little image of Alex said, “I can see that. You have a White Hat hack — it protects Game players worldwide. Otherwise, Moon Sim would work, but Moon Real could be shut down by one wacko loose cannon cop on the other side of the world.”

Tommy came down from his rant for a moment. “Or by a shakedown from some third world country. Look, it’ll be a cool game. I know games.”

The little picture of Alex was still, and then started speaking, hesitantly. “Tommy, what’s in it for you? You’d have organized Sim for the real Moon. You’d have built a new game — You aren’t planning to do this for free, are you?”

Tommy’s eyes lit up, like when he saw Sasha. “Moon Sim’ll take care of itself. Like Vengeance, there are all kinds of ways to work a profit even when the game’s free. For Moon Real….” He thought for a bit, then looked up. “How about if we win, and you guys get actual working rovers, give me one? Not sure what I’d do with it, but there must be something. Then I’d know the land and the machine. That’d help me develop the advanced game play. We’ll set up rules to allow staking claims, mining claims, and recording land changes, for people who are developing the Moon.”

55. It was Dark

Scroggins continued unfazed. “As the Moon was going dark from the total eclipse, your two rovers in pursuit were slowing down. The enemy took high ground, and let his power reserve increase to the max. Then he coasted downhill and attacked. When he attacked, his shadow cast forward, and blocked what little solar energy your rovers had. Then when your rovers were sluggish, barely moving, he ripped their PODs out.”

She spat at him. “No problem. I’ve ordered an XSWAT takedown of the AntiMatters Guild Headquarters. The ringleaders of this mutiny will be handcuffed, booked, and jailed.”

Scroggins did not stop or even slow down. “Director, regarding the XSWAT operation. The Guilds are worldwide, and don’t have a central command. They use a Blockchain technology for data, distributed over a hundred thousand personal computer systems around the world. There is no central database and no cloud data you can seize. Unless you can break their communications links, you can’t stop them. We know that the first action of a rebel is to yank the PODs from any of our rovers nearby. What will you do after the eclipse passes, if you have communications but there are no PODs in the rovers?”

“What should I do?” She looked into Scroggin’s thin, pasty white, unmoving face, but he was silent. Afraid. If he answered, he’d be responsible for the outcome.

She picked up her handheld, brought up the phone app, and made the call.

“Special Security? This is Director Sparrow. Execute Plan Moonbeam. Get your men to the L2 Comm Administrative Facility at the New Mexico Spaceport. Locate the inbound router handling traffic to and from the Moon and take physical control of it.”

She listened, then answered, “Do not touch or change anything. Just take physical control, and station guards. Take control of the building’s power, as well. Then await further instructions.”

Seventeen hundred miles away, at White Sands Missile Range, two Army helicopters lifted off and headed west, for the short hop to the Spaceport. In the air, the attack squad leader found info about the classified mission on his console. The package included the blueprints for the L2 Comm facilities at the Spaceport. The squad leader began forming their tactical deployments.

“One more thing. Bring up the Hackers-On-Call list and find someone to modify the L2 Comm space router code. We need to selectively block rovers on a case by case basis.”

Blair had been listening, and stepped forward. “Director. I would suggest the Sleeper? He was the hacker that got into the TSA airport scanners. He’s very talented. You may recall we recruited him last year?”

Darn right I remember that criminal. The guy who’d released live audio and video of the TSA agents. A hundred streams of video of various airport scanner review rooms. The hacker had publicly leaked TSA agents’ personal, private collections of the video and X-ray data.

The Sleeper had released hundreds of video clips of the agents watching and joking about their collections, the celebrities they gotten video and X-ray of, what they’d like to do with them. They’d been trading them on their breaks and at lunchtime. One of the agents had thousands, cross linked with all their personal information, and was auctioning off their info and pics on Internet auction sites. At least that’s what happened to the ones that didn’t pay off in his blackmail scheme.

Of course, the TSA itself had also been embarrassed. They had for years been claiming that they did not acquire precision body images from all those passing through the scanners, and that only cartoon representations of body images were used. But actually, they acquired and kept permanently all high-resolution video and X-ray data sets, and tagged them with the individual’s personal data. This data was extremely useful to the TSA. By compiling a history of body images, it was easy to certify if the person was who he claimed to be. And it was equally easy to tell if there was any contraband under the clothes.

The body image database was useful far more than just for national security purposes. For example, suppose that the body image history showed that a person had over the last five years gained weight. A certain amount of Good Spam would be routed to those individuals on the subject of weight loss. Eevenues to the government were substantial from spam licensing.

The TSA had been publicly advertising for years to airline, train, and bus passengers, “TSA will not ever invade your privacy. With our advanced technology, our trusted agents will never see you as you might appear naked!”

The nerve of that Sleeper, embarrassing rank and file TSA agents like that! The agents deserved respect and privacy.The TSA’s mission performance had certainly been damaged by the leaks of the Sleeper.

Particularly damaging had been the leaked videos of the gay and lesbian TSA agents, assigned to review same sex passengers. One had matched the passenger manifests with names of celebrities, VIPs, and the persons-of-interest database. For those selected, he matched their video with their X-ray video data, and then ran it through motion activation software. Simple as that, he had naked celebrity video. This enterprising agent proceeded to sell the nude celebrity video on public auction sites. He didn’t even bother to pay the government fees for online pornography distribution. The Sleeper tracked him down, too.

Once targeted by the TSA, the Sleeper was promptly rooted out, and his public leaks put to a stop. He was faced with prosecution under the Privacy Act for the video he’d released. The TSA made him a deal he couldn’t refuse. Help the TSA and stay out of jail.

Under the table of course, the powers-that-be encouraged the growth of the hacker community and saw to it that leading talented hackers got boosts of publicity. It made good stories for the media. “Creative, brilliant underdogs challenge the establishment!” It encouraged growth and identification of talent, which the government could not do within the stifling bounds of military, or civil service. However, these activities were closely monitored and the best individuals were tapped or if required, coerced into public service.

Then she thought of a solution. “Tell you what — Get a couple of local police over to him. They can get him up and on the job. We need to restore communications selectively, as soon as possible after that darn eclipse passes.” She looked to Scroggins. “How long do we have before the sun is back up and rover power is back up?”

“Ask” – what Googling is? What is the future equivalent of Google?

“Ask”, as the term is used in the novel, implies that portals such as Google’s search query are a thing of the past.  Search queries are  simply part of the interface of all handhelds, consoles and computers.  Content and meta data is distributed peer to peer, in fashions that users are not concerned with.

Today we can ask questions of Google and often get good quality answers.  Other times, it appears that business or political interests aligned with Google slant and filter the results.  As such trends continue and amplify, Google becomes more of a traditional “Internet portal” and less of a useful search engine.

From the history of Internet portals, going back to AOL, Compuserve, Protegy, and all the others, we know that the more rigid and structured they become, the more they fall into disuse.

Alternatives exist.  For example, under Kiwix it is easy to run a complete copy of Wikipedia locally, with no Internet connection.  The May 2015 copy is about 55 gigabytes.

Why Lunar Tourism Will Never Be Practical.

The practicality of lunar tourism is a function not just of consumer interest, but by the physical realities of the mission.  These include orbital mechanics, energy requirements and mission duration.  The orbital transfer used, for reasons of safety,  would be the same as used in Apollo, the Hohmann orbital transfer, and from that energy and fuel requirements may be calculated.  The Moon and the launch site on Earth (or the position of a Space Station, if it was from that that departure for the Moon occurred) would need to be in precise alignment.

Rovers Using IFR Navigation on the Moon?

Pilots navigate aircraft in two separate ways, abbreviated IFR and VFR. IFR is a term pilots use for “Instrument flight rules”, as opposed to “visual flight rules.” Visual is when a pilot flies by using his eyes to reference terrain, and uses his instruments as a secondary reference. They are necessary – for example, a pilot cannot tell with any precision his height above the ground without looking at the altimeter.

But with Instrument Flight Rules the pilot only uses his instruments. Ocean vessels are also captained when necessary in weather conditions by IFR methods.

Lava tubes on the Moon

Lava tubes are natural formations which follow volcanic activity. A stream of lava flows down an incline, the outside freezes while the interior continues flowing, until the interior is an empty tube. These tubes exist on Earth, and on the Moon and Mars.

On the Moon, these tubes are usually located near the boundaries of highland areas with Mares. Various popular articles have touted the possibility that future lunar settlements could house the habitats inside lava tubes. Is selling a one way trip to Mars a scam?

At this time (2015) they are a scam. The development of technology and solutions for such travel is not, but the selling of trips is, because it presupposes the existence of such technology and solutions. And they do not exist.

When would such a thing not be a scam?

When when facilities existed on the Red Planet to house and shelter humans and provide for their basic needs. When rockets existed in the size and style required for transport.

Therefore, the business opportunity in 2015 would seem to be in those infrastructure developments.   Those would be nanotech fabricators, various forms of 3d printers and replicators, and robots.  If these are not to the required technological level to accomplish the jobs as defined on Mars, then the useful work would be in bringing them to that stage.

This is all particularly true given that Mars has the full complement of elements to produce plastics, composites, and ceramics, as well as metals and metal alloys.

Because everything on the Moon is white, grey, or black, there is often no sense of perspective.  Is there an easy way to tell when a slope goes down or up?  If you see a group of mounds, are you sure they are not craters?  How does one tell a sinuous rille, which goes down like a riverbed, from a lava tube, which rises above the ground?

The Box: Could It Be A Fortress Built By Ancient Giant Aliens?

In the picture you can see a box or “Fortress,”, possibly built by ancient aliens.   Why has NASA hidden this from us?  How long have they known about it?  What else have they hidden?

 

Answer.

It’s just one more dull, uninteresting pile of basaltic rock with a layer of moon dirt and dust piled on top.   Nobody has hidden anything.  It just happens to be shaped crudely similar to a box, therefore some people may choose to build a myth on top of this natural formation.  Then they try to fool others into a NASA Conspiracy hoax.

Is a manned return to the Moon practical?

Although anything can be done, and several nations would like to match the American accomplishment of landing men on the Moon, the greater question is “Why?”

The American accomplishment of the Apollo missions simply cannot be matched. Repeating something done in 1969 with a flight in 2019, fifty years later is not matching Apollo.   It is repeating it, with all the advantages of advanced technology.   Fifty years worth.  It is like doing a cattle drive of the 1870s, in 2015. Light and shadow on the Moon

This is a brief look at  the issues of Lunar light and shadow.

First, consider that the limit of either light or shadow is the horizon, which is much closer on the Moon than on Earth.  On flat terrain such as a Mare, consider the horizon as less than two kilometers distance.  A 500 meter peak may cast a shadow over forty kilometers distant – far “over the horizon.”

Effectively this is why the lunar North and South pole could not be imaged until LRO did it with radar.  Consider the solar terminator moving the line of sunlight and dark across the lunar surface.  The Moon has a slight axial tilt relative to the Sun, so the point we call the “North Pole” is not 90 degrees tangent to the Sun.

Blood Moon Tetrads “Prophecy”

Recently a controversy has developed concerning the “Blood Moons.”  By way of explanation, Blood Moon refers to the orange-reddish color of the Moon during a full lunar eclipse.  At such times it is illuminated only by light passing around the perimeter of the Earth.  The fraction of the Sun’s rays which survives the long path through the atmosphere are in the red spectrum. 6,000 Year Old Earth Concept Is Not Proven By Lunar Dust

Here we look at a concept suggested by fundamentalist Christians that attempts to “prove” the Earth’s age as only some 6,000 years by way of lunar features.

This YE theory suggests that the layer of dust on the surface is so low that it could only have been deposited over a few thousand years. This refers to dust incoming from space, which on the Moon would be categorized as micrometeorite impacts.

Mohammed “Split the Moon” NOT

There is a controversy of sorts within Islam concerning a sentence or two in their holy books which assert that during a visit by Mohammed to Mecca, the Moon was split apart such that one piece was hidden behind a mountain, and another appeared in front of it.

First note that any Muslim recounting this story accurately will say that Allah split the Moon, not Mohammed.
